Torre Santa Sabina and the Costa Merlata in winter

Torre Santa Sabina

After a walk in the ancient town of Carovigno, it is worth stopping to discover its coast road. The Adriatic coast, in the 14 km that belong to the Brindisi town, is pleasant and characterized by a succession of small coves, low cliffs and large beaches of golden and thin sand. Between the Mediterranean nature and the clear sea, the coast of Carovigno preserves traces of civilization from the prehistoric age to the sixteenth century, such as, for example, the coastal tower of Santa Sabina.

Torre Santa Sabina

Torre Santa Sabina, is located 7 kilometers from Carovigno. Few people live here throughout the year but in summer it becomes particularly lively, thanks also to the various bars and restaurants by the sea. In the inhabited center is the Camerini Beach, a strip of sand enclosed in an inlet and characterized by a shallow seabed that makes it an ideal destination for families with children.

The small beach is guarded by the Torre di Santa Sabina which almost seems to emerge from the sea. It is one of the three towers, in addition to those of Torre San Giovanni and San Pietro in Bevagna, to have a star-shaped plant, also known as a "priest's hat", with four corners oriented towards the cardinal points and the crowning embattled. The architecture, fascinating in its Gothic style, was probably built by the feudal lords of Carovigno between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries as a watchtower for the marina and was later used as a protective tower against Saracen invasions.

Costa Merlata

If you have the possibility to travel by car, about 8 km from Torre Santa Sabina, we can reach the Costa Merlata, in the marina of Ostuni. The town owes its name to the particular conformation of its coast, so jagged that it resembles the battlements of medieval castles. Costa Merlata in winter is immersed in silence but in summer, despite being a well-known destination, it retains its natural appearance. On the main beach, the largest, is the homonymous village of Costa Merlata with services and a bar directly on the beach, while the rest of the coast is a rapid succession of coves of crystalline water immersed in the Mediterranean scrub.

A few days are enough to discover these corners of Salento and it doesn't matter whether it is in winter or spring, because it is a region that, despite frequent periods of rain or strong wind, temperatures are never excessively cold.
