Porto Selvaggio

The Porto Selvaggio and Palude del Capitano regional natural park is a protected natural area in Puglia and is in the province of Lecce, on the Ionian coast.

The park falls entirely within the territory of the municipality of Nardò. It includes the area of the equipped regional natural park of "Porto Selvaggio - Torre Uluzzo" (established in 1980) and the marsh del Capitano (classified as a natural area in 1997). The coast is rocky and indented, and characterized by pine forests and Mediterranean scrub. Along the coast are located the Torre dell'Alto, the Torre Uluzzo and the Torre Inserraglio. In the territory of the park there is also the Grotta del Cavallo, a natural coastal limestone cave, part of a larger system of natural caves located in the bay of Uluzzo.

The park was officially established with regional law n ° 21 of 1980 and was strenuously defended from building speculation by the then Councilor for the Environment in charge of the Municipality of Nardò, Dr. Renata Fonte, who became a symbol of the fight against illegality and violence against the territory.
