After the vibrant summer fades into a distant memory, Otranto in Salento still glows with tranquil beauty during the winter. With the soft lights of every day reflecting on its ancient walls and transforming it into an almost mystical nativity scene by the sea, I couldn't resist taking the opportunity to discover everything this enchanting village had to offer!
The historic center of Otranto
I crossed Porta Alfonsina - which takes its name from the liberation of Aragon which liberated the city from Turkish forces in 1481 - and I got lost in these serene streets, until I felt ready for everything that awaited me behind every corner. From fascinating places steeped in history and stories begging to be discovered, there is nothing quite like traveling through time here, at dusk!
While wandering the quaint alleyways of Otranto, Italy, my eye was immediately drawn to a small Byzantine basilica known as San Pietro - but wait until you see Santa Maria Annunziata! This age-old beauty is stunning; its radiant frescoes are an impressive visual feast and inside is what is believed to be the largest floor mosaic in Europe. Of course, no visit would be complete without admiring the breathtaking Castello Aragonese: this imposing fortress not only serves as a symbolic place for all travelers passing through, but also hosts festive events during Christmas and various national and international exhibitions throughout the year .
But if after sightseeing you want something more relaxed, come back to the city: here there are many cozy cafes offering local handicrafts and delicious restaurants where you can satisfy your palate with Italian delicacies... Enjoy your meal!
New Year's Eve 2023 in Otranto
New Year's Eve is an exciting time of year, but there's no better place than Otranto's Alba dei Popoli - Luce d'Oriente festival. Celebrating art, culture and music with all the inhabitants of the Apulian land and beyond, is a special evening that you won't soon forget!
As midnight approaches December 31st, join the crowds in chanting as they await the fireworks that will herald the arrival of 2023.
And then, even more, go down to the seafront or towards the Bastioni dei Pelasgi, where you can witness Italy awakening with the first rays of the sun rising over the sea: don't forget your coat!
